These days, computers play a significant role in both work and leisure activities, putting our eyes under increased strain. How to Relieve Eye Strain

1. Adjust the contrast as well as the brightness on the displays, or see if there is a special setting for eye comfort.
2. Consider wearing blue-blocking eyewear. That can really help.
3. There is an application that can be downloaded called F.LUX (https://justgetflux.com/) that your IT group should be able to install that can help work in the background to help ease eye strain.
4. Make sure you are looking away from your screen every 20 minutes for 20 seconds, attempting to refocus the eyes on something 20+ feet away.
5. Consider if there is any direct light source that is uncovered that is within your line of vision that could be causing strain.
6. Contact an eye professional for a checkup.

5 TIPS: Driving Ergonomics

Holidays, vacations, and sometimes even business trips may cause us to spend hours and even days in the car. While road trips can be an adventure, they can also lead to low back pains, stiffness, shoulder pain, leg cramps, and more. Prolonged time sitting in one position can cause a host of problems for the musculoskeletal system.
Proper driving ergonomics and some practical steps can reduce your chance of experiencing an onset of painful symptoms. Here are five tips:
- Take frequent rest stops, exit the car and move around. Stretch your muscles.
- Set your driver’s seat so your elbows are well below your shoulders.
- Be sure that you “fit” well in the car that you are going to purchase.
- Begin your trip and adjust the mirrors. Don’t re-adjust them as the trip progresses instead adjust your body to return to your initial position.
- Seek advice and treatment from your Physical Therapist if you develop pain following a long trip.

TIPS: Video Game & Electronic Injury Prevention
The American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT) offers the following tips to prevent hand injuries while using portable electronics and video games.
1. Use a neutral grip when holding the controller – A neutral grip is when the wrist is straight, not bent in either direction.
2. Take a break every hour or switch to another activity – This will help to prevent overuse of just one muscle or tendon.
3. Make sure the monitor is at the correct height – While looking at the horizon, your eyes should be looking at the top of the monitor.
4. If you are typing, the keyboard should be at a height so the wrist/hands are straight and forearms are parallel to the keyboard surface.
5. When using a handheld device like a tablet, put pillows in your lap and rest arms on pillows – This will allow you to keep your head in a more upright position and decrease neck strain. The pillows will help support the arms so they do not have to be held up in the air.
6. You should be sitting in an appropriate chair – This would be a chair that allows you to comfortably put your feet on the floor and also provides good back support.
7. When using a single control device (like a mouse), switch hands frequently. This will allow the hands to rest and reduce fatigue.
8. Frequently focus on a distant object (away from the monitor) to help reduce eye fatigue.
